PayeCards
Overview
A multi-currency digital bank — accounts, cards, and crypto wallets — where I joined mid-build to revamp the UI and ship the core account and wallet integrations.
The problem
I joined after the product was already half-built, so the original problem framing predates me — my mandate was to bring the UI to a shippable standard and finish integrating account features that were still stubbed out, including the virtual bank account and crypto wallets.
How I thought about it
Coming in on a partially-built codebase meant working with decisions I hadn't made: instead of rewriting from scratch, I audited the existing UI for the inconsistencies causing the most confusion, revamped those systematically, then moved into wiring up the account and wallet features against their real APIs.
Key decisions
- Standardized the revamped UI on the existing MUI foundation rather than introducing a second component system, so it read as one coherent product rather than two eras stitched together.
- Integrated the virtual bank account and crypto wallet features behind a shared account-state layer, so balances and transactions rendered consistently regardless of which asset type they came from.
- Built identity verification around real-time, camera-based liveness checks so an account could be gated on KYC before it could send or receive funds.
Challenges
- Making UI and product decisions consistent with a partially-built codebase and product vision I hadn't been part of shaping from the start.
- Integrating fiat bank accounts and crypto wallets side by side without their different balance semantics, latency, and failure modes leaking into the user's mental model.
- Getting camera-based identity verification to work reliably across a wide range of devices and browsers as a hard gate on account access.
Results
- Took the product from half-built to live, with a revamped UI and working virtual bank account and crypto wallet features.
- Live today, offering multi-currency accounts, cards, and crypto wallets.
