GRO
Overview
A web investment portal that opened FCMB's GRO investment product to everyone, not just existing bank customers — invest by card, receive gains to any bank.
The problem
GRO existed only as a mobile app gated behind an FCMB bank account, so anyone without one — the majority of potential investors — couldn't use the product at all.
How I thought about it
I treated the account requirement as the actual product barrier, not the app itself: the web portal needed to stand entirely on its own, letting someone invest and get paid out without ever touching an FCMB account, so I designed onboarding, payment, and payout around card and bank-agnostic identity rather than assuming an existing banking relationship.
Key decisions
- Built a card-based investment flow fully decoupled from the FCMB account system, so first-time visitors could invest without opening a bank account.
- Used MUI to move quickly through the dense KYC, payment, and investment forms the flow required, layering Tailwind for the surrounding marketing and layout work.
- Generalized the payout step to support disbursing investment gains to any Nigerian bank, instead of assuming FCMB as the destination.
Challenges
- Running KYC and identity verification for card-paying users with no existing FCMB relationship to draw trust or data from.
- Coordinating three independent moving parts — card payment status, investment position, and bank payout — into one coherent flow for the user.
- Designing onboarding and investment screens from scratch for the web, for a product that had only ever existed as a mobile app tied to a bank account.
Results
- Opened GRO's investment product to any Nigerian with a debit card, independent of FCMB account status.
- Grew digital investment adoption by 35%, now processing over 20,000 monthly transactions.
- Live and in production for over three years.
