Our Nigeria
Overview
An AI-powered civic transparency app that lets Nigerians ask, in plain English or Pidgin, about government budgets, and bills across all 36 states and the FCT.
The problem
Government budget and spending data existed, but reaching it meant digging through scattered, disconnected sources — real research work rather than something an everyday citizen could just ask a question about.
How I thought about it
I treated the conversational interface as the product rather than a feature bolted onto a dashboard: instead of asking citizens to learn a new tool, I built around a single input where they could ask a question in their own words — including Pidgin — and get a direct answer pulled from budgets, spending, and public records.
Key decisions
- Built the UI on Next.js with shadcn/ui and Tailwind CSS to keep a consistent, accessible component system spanning both structured data views (budgets, bills, officials) and the free-form chat interface.
- Made the chat interface the primary way to reach the data rather than a secondary feature next to a traditional dashboard, so budgets, govspend, corruption records, and bills were all reachable from one input.
- Supported Pidgin as a first-class input language alongside English, since meeting people in the language they already use mattered more than defaulting to formal English only.
Challenges
- Presenting data from 36 states and the FCT through one consistent interface, despite each state's records differing in structure and completeness.
- Keeping AI-generated answers trustworthy on numeric budget data, where an imprecise figure undermines the whole point of the tool.
- Rendering dense structured data (tables, figures) inline with conversational answers without the chat interface feeling cluttered or slow.
Results
- Live with coverage of budgets, daily govspend, corruption records, public officials, and bills across all 36 states and the FCT.
- Gives everyday citizens a plain-language way to interrogate public spending data that previously required manual digging.
